A coastal wildlife route

The Boca Chica Loop includes Boca Chica Beach and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Boca Chica Tract. USFWS gives driving directions along State Highway 4 toward the Boca Chica Tract and beach. The refuge describes sandy terrain; check the current permitted access before exploring. Check the City’s live beach and road status before setting out and follow the USFWS Boca Chica access information.

What may be seen

Texas Parks & Wildlife describes coastal grasslands, lomas, tidal flats and shorebird habitat along the loop. It notes Wilson’s Plovers nesting on flats beside the road, Botteri’s Sparrows in spring and summer, and up to 100 Ospreys on telephone poles in winter and migration. Piping Plovers and other shorebirds are often seen on the beach; Brown Booby sightings at the jetties are described as very rare. These are seasonal possibilities, not sightings guaranteed on a visit. Read TPWD’s Boca Chica Loop guide.

Stay on public routes and protect wildlife

On refuge property, use designated roads, trails and parking; the Lower Rio Grande Valley Refuge is open from official sunrise to official sunset. Camping and alcohol are prohibited on refuge land. Do not feed, disturb or collect plants or animals. Keep pets leashed; USFWS recommends leaving them at home. Check the refuge rules.

USFWS says Texas beachgoers who see a nesting sea turtle, nest or hatchlings should call 1-866-TURTLE-5 (1-866-887-8535). Keep at least 100 feet away from a nesting turtle and do not disturb it or the nest. The agency asks people reporting a nesting turtle to remain on site until a biologist arrives, if possible. Read the current federal sea turtle guidance.

Keep an alternate coastal plan

The City lists South Padre Island beach accesses as alternatives when Boca Chica is closed. It is a separate destination with its own access and conditions. Explore our South Padre Island guide or nearby gateway experiences, and check the official notice again before changing your route.
