Day Trips from South Padre Island
The island itself can fill a week, but the surrounding mainland rewards a day away from the sand. The Queen Isabella Causeway — the long bridge connecting the island to Port Isabel — is the gateway. Everything below is an easy drive.
Port Isabel (15 minutes)
Port Isabel is the mainland town at the foot of the causeway, and it's the obvious first day trip. The historic downtown clusters around the Port Isabel Lighthouse — an 1852 brick beacon, the only Texas Gulf Coast lighthouse open to the public. Climb the 75 steps for a panoramic view of the island, the Laguna Madre, and the Gulf. The lighthouse is operated as a Texas Historical Commission State Historic Site.
Note: The lighthouse is in Port Isabel on the mainland — a short drive across the causeway from the island, not on the island itself. Plan half a day: the lighthouse, the surrounding historic district, and lunch at a Port Isabel seafood spot.
The Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum (covering the 1554 Spanish shipwrecks) are both in the lighthouse square area.
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (45 minutes)
Northwest of the island on the mainland, Laguna Atascosa is the largest protected area of natural habitat in the lower Rio Grande Valley. It's prime wildlife country — ocelots (rare and elusive), aplomado falcons, and huge wintering waterfowl concentrations. The auto tour loop and hiking trails are the main draws. Check the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service site for current hours and any seasonal closures.
South Texas border towns (1–2 hours)
Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas, offers the Gladys Porter Zoo, the historic downtown, and border culture. It's about 30 minutes from the island. Farther west, the Rio Grande Valley's birding corridor — Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park — makes a full day for serious birders (see our birding guide).
Mexico — check current advisories first
Matamoros, Mexico, sits across the border from Brownsville, roughly an hour from the island. Important: the U.S. State Department currently rates Tamaulipas — the Mexican state where Matamoros is located — as Level 4: Do Not Travel, citing crime and kidnapping. Check the current advisory at travel.state.gov before considering any cross-border travel. Standard requirements such as a valid passport and Mexico-valid vehicle insurance also apply.
A note on Padre Island National Seashore
Don't confuse South Padre Island with the Padre Island National Seashore — that protected seashore is a separate destination near Corpus Christi, roughly 180 miles north. Our Corpus Christi guide covers that region.
Planning tips
- The causeway: The Queen Isabella Causeway is the island's only road connection. It's a high bridge — spectacular views, but pay attention in high winds.
- Timing: Leave the island by mid-morning for mainland trips to make the most of the day. Traffic backs up on the causeway during peak checkout/check-in times (weekends).
- What to bring: What you'd bring for the mainland destination, plus patience — the Valley runs on its own unhurried clock.
How this guide stays honest
Drive times are approximate and vary with traffic and construction. Attraction hours and border requirements change. We've described what's where and why it's worth the drive — not current schedules or crossing rules. Verify hours and requirements before each trip.
