Welcome to South Padre Island
Explore South Padre Island
Seven ways to enjoy the island, from Gulf beaches to bay-side wildlife.
South Padre Island is the town at the south end of Padre Island, the long barrier island running down the Texas Gulf Coast. It's a beach town first: wide Gulf beaches on the east side, the calm Laguna Madre bay on the west, and a compact strip of restaurants, shops, and attractions along Padre Boulevard connecting them.
Start here
If you only have a day, start with the water. Walk the Gulf beach in the morning, then visit Sea Turtle, Inc. to see the rescue facility's resident sea turtles and learn about the conservation work that's been going on here since 1977. The birding guide covers the nature center and the island's role on the migratory flyway.
The pieces of the island
Beaches. The Gulf side has miles of open beach. Isla Blanca Park at the island's southern tip offers beach access, fishing jetties, and RV sites with views across the Brownsville Ship Channel.
Wildlife. Sea Turtle, Inc. rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles. The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center covers 50 acres with boardwalks, bird blinds, and a five-story observation tower over Laguna Madre Bay.
Family. The Beach Waterpark (formerly Schlitterbahn) anchors the family day with slides and a lazy river. The lighthouse across the causeway in Port Isabel — built in 1852, the only Texas Gulf Coast beacon open to the public — makes an easy half-day trip.
Dining. Dirty Al's has served Gulf seafood since 1986, and Blackbeard's has been an island institution for over 40 years. Both are on every first-timer's list.
How we keep this honest
