Starbase and South Padre Island Trip Planner
Pair a Starbase and Boca Chica visit with South Padre Island, and keep an alternate beach plan for closure days.
Two South Texas coastal stops
Starbase and South Padre Island sit in the same broader South Texas trip area, but they are reached by different public routes. Plan the drive through the Brownsville area; do not assume there is a direct road crossing between the island and Boca Chica.
Start with the City of Starbase's beach and road status. It lists South Padre Island beach accesses as alternatives when Boca Chica Beach is closed.
Build an alternate plan
If the road or beach is closed, shift the beach portion of the day to South Padre Island and keep Starbase as a later visit. The island has separate lodging, dining, and outdoor guides.
Check current notices before departure and again before changing your route. Closure windows and road delays can change.
