Your Coastal Guide
Rockport and Fulton are two small towns sharing one Aransas Bay shoreline on the Texas Coastal Bend. Rockport is the larger working town — harbor, restaurants, shops, the art scene. Fulton is the quieter neighbor — the harbor, the beach, the mansion. Visitors treat them as one place; this guide does too.
This is the front door. Seven guides branch from here. Every fact on this site carries a verification date — here's how we work. Planning to stay awhile? Explore waterfront inns, hotels, condos, and other overnight options in our Rockport-Fulton lodging guide.
The seven guides
- Fishing Without a Boat — piers, shore access, bait shops, and what to target each season. Every pier status dated and verified.
- Birding, Cranes & Hummingbirds — whooping cranes at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, year-round birding, and hummingbird season.
- The Ferry Route — the classic day trip: Rockport to Aransas Pass to the free ferry to Port Aransas, and back.
- Fulton Mansion & the Fulton Story — the 1877 Second Empire mansion, the cattle empire that built it, and the family behind it all.
- Evenings: Food, Drink & Live Music — where the night goes, who's playing, and the waterfront scene.
- Rockport Rising — the Hurricane Harvey recovery story, tracked as it happens and dated as it's verified.
- Rockport Beach — fees, hours, access, and what to expect at the town beach. Structured, verified, no guesswork.
Current & Upcoming Events
Current & Upcoming Events is assembled from verified event and music listings — if it's listed, it's checked. Happening Today, This Weekend, Coming Soon, and Recurring Events & Entertainment cover festivals, markets, music, and community happenings, including Rockport Market Days. Check the current events listings and organizer announcements for confirmed dates before making plans.

Start here: the first-timer chain
If you've never been and have one full day, this is the highest-confidence sequence:
- Morning — the ferry route: drive to Aransas Pass, ride the free ferry to Port Aransas (under 10 minutes), walk the waterfront, ride back. Port Aransas is on Mustang Island — not in Rockport, and we never imply otherwise.
- Midday — Rockport Beach: lunch at the beach, swim, regroup.
- Afternoon — Fulton Mansion: the 1877 mansion tour, 45–60 minutes, indoors if the weather turns.
Short on time? The mansion alone answers "what is this place" better than anything else here.
Getting here
- San Antonio — about 160–174 miles, 2.5–3 hours. Our best-evidenced drive market.
- Austin — about 190–192 miles, 3.25–3.5 hours.
- Houston — about 188–196 miles, 3.2–4 hours. Galveston is 51 miles from Houston, so Houston travelers are choosing Rockport for the bay fishing, the cranes, the mansion, and the small-town coast — not the sand.
- Victoria — about 64 miles, 1.5 hours. No visitation evidence found; we don't claim what we can't support.
- Corpus Christi — about 30 miles, 32–38 minutes. Not an inland feeder market — it's the regional gateway (CRP airport) and a day-trip node.
- Flying — Corpus Christi International (American, Southwest, United, plus Frontier nonstop to Denver) is the commercial airport, about 38 miles / 40–45 minutes from Rockport. Aransas County Airport (RKP) serves general aviation only — no scheduled commercial service.
The places beyond town
Three public lands orbit Rockport-Fulton, each with its own page and verified facts:
- Goose Island State Park — about 15 minutes out. Day fee $5 adult, free 12 and under; 1,620-foot fishing pier; fishing from shore or pier needs no license (per TPWD). Pier status: call (361) 729-2858 to confirm before driving over.
- Mustang Island State Park — on Mustang Island south of Port Aransas, reached via the ferry. $7 adult, free 12 and under. Older "$5" copy online is stale.
- Padre Island National Seashore — about 40 miles via the ferry route (1–1.5 hours with waits). A long day trip or an overnight, not a casual add-on.
- Aransas National Wildlife Refuge — the whooping-crane winter home; see Birding.
A note on what's still being verified
Parts of this guide are explicitly marked unverified or need re-checking — pier phones, some fees, live-music venues. That's not a bug; it's the product. How we verify explains the labels, and contact is the door for corrections.
