Beaches & Islands of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi sits at the hinge of two barrier islands, and keeping them straight is the single most useful thing a visitor can do. Get this right and the whole coast unscrambles.
Padre Island vs. Mustang Island — the explainer
Padre Island is the landform: the long barrier island sheltering the Laguna Madre. Its southern two-thirds, North Padre Island, are protected as Padre Island National Seashore — about 66 miles of undeveloped Gulf beach per the NPS brochure, established September 28, 1962. NPS's exact phrasing, confirmed from the park's own pages: "the longest undeveloped barrier island in the United States." This is the wild side: dunes, surf, sea turtles, and a Park Road 22 entrance that runs into 70 miles of Gulf front. An NPS entrance fee applies.
Mustang Island is the separate island to the north — the developed one. It holds beach parks, Mustang Island State Park, and the town of Port Aransas at its north end. Whole-island length figures vary by source, so none are stated here — think of the contrast qualitatively: undeveloped vs. developed, Seashore vs. town.
And then there is South Padre Island — a different town, far to the south, with a similar name. It is not here. This mistake gets made constantly; don't make it.
Padre Island National Seashore
Enter via Park Road 22 — the JFK Causeway carries TX 358 east from Corpus Christi and becomes Park Road 22 onto the island (no engineering figures are asserted here; the crossing is a bridge, and that's enough). Inside, the headline event is the NPS-run Kemp's ridley sea turtle hatchling release program: seasonal, conditional on hatchling readiness, and not something to plan a trip around without checking nps.gov/pais first. The Hatchling Hotline at (361) 949-7163 was verified current on the NPS contacts page. Check NPS seasonal hours and current fee/pass information at nps.gov/pais before you go.
The National Seashore also anchors the grand coastal loop: Seashore to Mustang Island to Port Aransas in one long beach day — the beach-loop grand tour. Verify NPS and TPWD conditions and the ferry situation before attempting the full loop.
North Beach
Across the bay from downtown, North Beach is the bay-side beach district on Corpus Christi Bay — and the city's two heavy hitters both live here: the USS Lexington Museum, the WWII aircraft carrier (CV-16, commissioned 1943, museum ship since 1992) moored on the bay, and the Texas State Aquarium, designated the Official Aquarium of Texas in 1985. The classic beach day here is sand, bay views, and the Lexington and Aquarium within easy reach. Naval Air Station Corpus Christi has no public access — the city's naval-aviation story is told through the Lexington.
The Gulf side: Bob Hall Pier, Whitecap, Packery Channel
On the open Gulf side of Padre Island, Bob Hall Pier in Padre Balli Park is the rebuilt Gulf fishing pier — the original was destroyed by Hurricane Hanna (2020), and the rebuilt pier officially reopened in February 2026. Restaurant and concession status, fees, and hours can change and should be checked with the current managing authority: confirm with Nueces County beach parks before visiting. Whitecap Beach is the Gulf-front beach access on Padre Island — surf fishing, walking, and beach-going under the General Land Office's Texas beach programs. Packery Channel is the artificial inlet between the Gulf and the Laguna Madre, flanked by jetties; jetty fishing is reported, but conditions and footing change — use caution and check locally. The Packery Channel Nature Park shore/birding park along the channel was closed for an ~8-month boardwalk construction project announced in February 2026 — likely still closed; check before visiting.
One standing note for every beach in this guide: beach conditions, fees, facilities, and rules change. Verify locally before planning around them — beach fees and facilities change.

Water Quality & Advisories
What bacteria advisories mean
Texas Beach Watch, run by the Texas General Land Office, tests coastal water for Enterococcus bacteria, an indicator of fecal contamination. When a sample exceeds the state threshold, an advisory is issued recommending against swimming until levels subside.
A bacteria advisory is not the same as a beach closure. It is also different from rip currents, lightning, jellyfish, red tide, and weather hazards, which are tracked by other authorities. A bacteria advisory speaks only to bacterial water quality at the sampled location, on the sampled date.
After rain: Water contact should be curtailed for 48 to 72 hours following moderate to heavy rainfall, as runoff can elevate bacteria levels.
